I was quite happy with the old site design when I put it together. I felt I had achieved a certain number of goals and that it was a success. Over time, and with proximity to people who actually know a thing or two about design, I started to notice lots of little (and some big) annoying details that really detracted from the design. Some of them were fundamental problems of the design, others were due to the way I approached the implementation, and the rest were just things I didn't know anything about at the time.
So instead of setting about to fix them one by one I decided to start from scratch, paying attention to the problems that I'd encountered before. And this is what I came up with. Sure, its probably got its own issues, but I think its a far sight better than the old one.
Edit: I've been playing with Photoshop and my photo archive to create a series of rotating banner images. So far I've got 8, but I might add more later on. Here is a view of all the banners.

Normally I don't like embedding external media into my site, but I thought with the proliferation of cool stuff floating about YouTube and Google Video these days, why the hell not?
For your viewing pleasure:
The new offering from Valve is a revolutionary game called "Portal". Instead of the traditional FPS shoot-em-up that we're all used to, Valve have redefined the way we interact with the environment to breathe some fresh air into the genre.
What would you do if you had asong, 8 treadmills and a dash of inspiration? Why, make a music video, of course! Original as it is funny.
This apparently was another one of those "Internet Phenomenons" around April or so (you know, like the Badger thing, All Your Base, etc). I can't believe I missed it (or can I?).
Clickedy on the picture to have your brain washed clean.
If you feel like you could just stick it on in the background and listen to it all day, that's okay - I feel that way too.
The tune itself is a fragment of a Finnish folk song called Ievan Polkka, sung by Loituma. Next up is a video of the folks from Loituma singing the full song (although the sound isn't very good)
Well that's all for tonight! Stay tuned for another exciting episode of Shit Chris finds on teh Internets!

Like the new layout? I do. But then I would say that, having designed an implemented it.

What's your South Park character?
In other news, when Peter (from work) stopped by on Sunday before we all headed out to the Duck Stein for Niall and Leesa's wedding celebration, he got curious about the contents of my sword bag. So I then started getting it all out to show him (hey, he asked!). As I started to take my sword out, both he and Jono moved to the other couch, away from me.
Why does everybody keep doing that??

I bought my own naginata at training tonight. I don't strictly speaking need one, but it's much better to use and maintain your own equipment than to use the club equipment. And it was a good excuse to whip out the camera and play with Photoshop again.
And I also did another banner image for the new template. I also updated the old banner image to make it more "wide browser friendly" (plus using a bit of css). Overall, I'm happy with the template. It actually gives me motivation to actually finish the site design / re-implementation.
I think I need to invest in a tripod. And yes, perhaps I am going somewhat overboard with the de-coloured images...
