Interesting that I haven't written anything on here in a week, especially when so much has been going through my mind. So is this really a place to dump my thoughts, or is it more of a place to post the results? Time will tell, although there is a distinct tendancy to not post my inner thoughts.
The nature of my work has changed dramatically in the last week. The last "Life Sucks" post was in reference to the uncertainty I was feeling. Internal politics has meant that my immediate boss, Ben, now heads up another department, while the old boss there, Ric, is pursuing his career as a Project Manager. Ben and I were the only members of a team that managed and maintained a group of servers that were eventually going to be scrapped in favour of a new system that we were developing (which involved us, and a few people in other departments).
This would have meant that either: I retained sole responsibility for these servers; they get rolled into my parent departments services (never happen, it's not their focus); goes back to the other team with Ben. The third is the best option. So then what happens to me? I either be absorbed by the parent dept, and continue working on this project (although we don't have the servers anymore, so when it came time to roll out it'd be a bit dicky), or ... what? Given the unlikelyhood of the project continuing (an almost certainty), that left me in the lurch a bit. <sarcasm> Like all great restructures, this was well thought out and all bases coverred </sarcasm>.
That was the state of things when I posted last.
The project was officially cancelled, but in the end it wasn't a problem. Ben offerred me a position within the new team doing interesting stuff, and I also heard from another department that they were looking for programmers. Two equally appealing prospects! Each had their pro's and con's, but for a while there it definately looked like the programming job was the winning ticket. I eventually decided to go work for Ben (for various reasons that I won't bore you with).
Ben was both shocked and happy <grin>
I get some freedom on what I want to do, so for now it'll just be a mix of systems admin and development work. I'll probably be called a Systems Developer or something. We're still actually defining the role, but we already know the gist of it. It'll be something fun to do :)
